How to play

Look at your card: you see the location and your role there. If you're the spy, you only see that you're the spy and the list of possible locations. Keep it secret and tap Got It.

When it's your turn, ask someone a question about the location out loud, pick who you asked and tap I Asked This Player. Whoever answers asks next; you can't ask back the player who just asked you.

If you think you've found the spy, tap Accuse. If everyone except the accused says Yes, their card is revealed; a single No turns it down. Everyone gets one accusation per game.

When time runs out, everyone secretly votes for the player they think is the spy. The spy is caught only with the most votes alone; otherwise the spy escapes and wins.

A spy caught by the vote gets a last chance: pick the location from the list. Get it right and the spy still wins; get it wrong and the innocents win.

When the game ends, you see the winning side, how the game ended, everyone's card and the round history.
Everyone but one player sees the same location and their role there; that player is the spy and has no idea where you are. Take turns asking each other questions out loud: your answer should prove you know the place without tipping off the spy. Meanwhile, the spy listens and tries to work out the location.
The innocents win if they catch the spy with an accusation or with the vote when time runs out. The spy wins by guessing the location or by escaping the vote.
How to win
The innocents win if an accusation catches the spy, if the spy guesses the wrong location, or if the vote catches the spy and the last-chance guess is wrong. The spy wins by guessing the location, if an innocent is accused and everyone agrees, or by escaping the vote when time runs out.

Where Are We? rules
Every rule of the game, from scoring to how a game is won.
Overview
- Where Are We? is a hidden-location game. There is always 1 spy; everyone else is innocent. There are no points: either the spy or the innocents win.
- Each game uses one package, and each package is one location. Along with the location, a package has 9 roles and 11 decoy locations to mislead the spy.
- An innocent's card shows the location's name and picture plus their own role's name and picture. Every innocent has a different role.
- The spy's card only says that they are the spy. The spy doesn't know the location and tries to work it out from the questions.
- Everyone, the spy included, sees the same Possible locations list. It has 12 locations in shuffled order, and the real one is among them.
Questions and the clock
- When the cards are dealt, everyone looks at their card and taps Got It. On one phone, the phone is passed around; on everyone's phone, each player sees their own card on their own screen.
- A random player asks first. The asker asks someone a question about the location out loud and picks that player in the app. Whoever answers asks the next question.
- You can't ask yourself, and you can't ask back the player who just asked you.
- Your answer should show that you know the location, but not so clearly that the spy can guess it.
- The round lasts 6, 8 or 10 minutes, as the host chooses; 8 minutes by default. The clock can be paused, and it also stops during an accusation vote, then picks up where it left off.
- On everyone's phone, you can tap locations on the list to cross them out; only you see this. On one phone, the list sits in front of everyone, so it can't be marked.
- To check your card again, press and hold My card on everyone's phone, or tap My card and pick your name on one phone.
Accusations
- Every player gets one accusation per game. During the questions, you can tap Accuse at any time and name a player. The spy can accuse too.
- An accusation passes only if everyone except the accused agrees; the accuser's yes counts automatically. A single no turns it down.
- On everyone's phone, each player taps Yes or No. On one phone, the table decides together and picks Everyone agrees or Someone disagrees.
- If the accusation passes, the accused player's card is revealed. If they are the spy, the innocents win; if they are innocent, the spy wins.
- If it's turned down, the questions continue where they left off, and the accuser's one accusation is used up.
The spy's guess
- During the questions, the spy can tap Guess the location at any time and pick a location from the list. This works even while the clock is paused, but not during an accusation vote or the final vote.
- The spy gets one guess. If it's right, the spy wins; if it's wrong, the innocents win.
- On one phone, every player's card has the Guess the location button. If an innocent taps it, they're told they aren't the spy, so watching the screen never reveals who the spy is.
Final vote and last chance
- When time runs out, everyone, the spy included, secretly votes for the player they think is the spy. You can't vote for yourself.
- On everyone's phone, all players vote at the same time and the vote lasts 60 seconds; it ends early once everyone has voted. On one phone, the phone is passed around and there is no timer.
- The spy is caught only if they alone have the most votes.
- If an innocent has the most votes, if there is a tie for the most votes, or if nobody votes, the spy escapes and wins right away. There is no last chance in this case.
- If the vote catches the spy, the spy gets a last chance to pick the location from the list. On everyone's phone the spy has 60 seconds for it; if time runs out, the innocents win. If it's right, the spy wins; if it's wrong, the innocents win.
Winning and losing
- The innocents win if an accusation catches the spy, if the spy guesses the wrong location, or if the vote catches the spy and the last-chance guess is wrong.
- The spy wins if an innocent is accused and everyone agrees, if the spy guesses the location (even as a last chance), or if the spy escapes the final vote.
- A game never ends in a draw: either the spy or all the innocents win. The cases where a game ends with no winner are listed under Special cases.
Special cases
- On everyone's phone, a player who disconnects stays in the game, but the card reveal, accusations and the final vote don't wait for them.
- If it's the turn of a player who has disconnected, anyone can tap Skip Turn and the turn passes to a random player. If that player leaves the game, the turn passes to another player on its own.
- If an innocent leaves, the game goes on. If the accused player leaves during an accusation, it counts as turned down.
- If the spy leaves, the innocents win.
- If players leave and fewer than 3 remain in the room, the game ends with no winner.
- If the host leaves, the game goes on: hosting passes at once to the next signed-in player. If the host loses connection, everyone is warned after 1 minute, and hosting passes on if they aren't back within 2 minutes. If the host is the spy, leaving counts as the spy leaving and the innocents win.
- On everyone's phone, accusation votes have no timer; the game waits for every connected player to answer.
Host settings
- Round time: 6, 8 or 10 minutes. 8 minutes by default. There are no other settings: every game has 1 spy and every player gets one accusation.
- On everyone's phone, the host can tap Start Without Waiting to begin the questions before everyone has checked their card, and only the host can tap Pause. On one phone, anyone can use the Pause button.
- Timers may change in future updates.

Questions about Where Are We?
How many players can play?
3 to 10 players. Every game has 1 spy.
Do we play on one phone or on everyone's phone?
Either works. On one phone, you pass it around so everyone sees their card and votes in secret. On everyone's phone, each player sees their card on their own screen, can cross out locations on their own list, and all players vote at the same time.
How long does a game take?
The questions last 6, 8 or 10 minutes; with the card reveal and the vote, a game takes about 8–15 minutes. An accusation or the spy's guess can end it sooner.
What happens if the final vote is a tie?
The spy escapes and wins. The spy is caught only with the most votes alone, and even then gets one last chance to guess the location.
